About Me
Hi! I am Scarlett
Welcome to my backpacking adventures.
As clique as it sounds, I always knew that I wanted to travel as much as I possibly could. But I also knew that I was expected to study and aim to get a degree.
I followed the traditional path, completing my foundation diploma in Art and Design, applying to all the good universities, and preparing for further study.
After completing my foundation diploma I spent the summer backpacking across Europe with my best friend, doing the classic interrail trip and living our absolute best lives!
It also made me realise that University really wasn’t going to be for me….
Nethertheless, I got back home from this trip and I started to study for my bachelor degree because that’s what I thought I was supposed to do. It didn’t last very long, and after 4 months I dropped out.

Things you may want to know
1. How do I afford to go on big trips?
Since dropping out of university I have worked full time at a bar, and essentially saved everything I earned – I don’t tend to buy myself much outside of plane tickets! The first year after leaving University I essentially did nothing but work and save until I had enough to take some time off and backpack across New Zealand! After returning home from this I essentially grinded again whilst planning my next trip to Asia.
3. Have I ever been in danger?
Not necessarily, but there have been quite a few times where I have been quite scared, and things could have ended badly! There was one point in Greece where we went off the beaten track too hard and had to go into a restaurant in the middle of nowhere begging them to call a taxi because it was pitch black and we were just a littleeee lost… Don’t worry mum I will karate chop anyone who comes close 😉
2. How Do I plan my trips?
Generally I fixate on a place for ages until I decide I have to go no matter what lol. I will normally start with knowing roughly where I want to begin my trip and then I will do a bit of research and it will all take off from there! I do have the very serious problem of wanting to go everywhere so that does add a bit of difficulty!
4. How do I get around?
It definitely depends on the location, but 99% of the time I take the cheapest and most time consuming option – unfortunately they tend to go hand in hand. Backpacking Europe I got around via a mixture of trains and buses, ending my trip by getting the train from Romania all the way to London (don’t recommend). New Zealand was via hitchhiking (sorry mum) and intercity buses. China by train, and Japan a combination of trains and domestic flights (got a bit boujee here).
